MT. PLEASANT — The Lakeshore Badgers increased their season record to 6-6 following a victory of the Mid-Michigan Raptors Friday, Dec. 12. The Badgers won 4-1.
” After our games last weekend against Jenison and the Kalamazoo Eagles, we put a lot of emphasis on pre-game preparation and starting strong,” said Badgers Coach Brian Zatloukal. “The team responded, coming out hard and carrying play in the first period. Overall play was a bit choppy, but we were able to break through and score with 6 minutes remaining in the first period on a goal from Ryan Higley (Ludington High School junior) with assists from Levi Young (Mason County Central senior) and Jayden Mirretti (LHS senior). We added a second goal with 19 seconds remaining in the first period with a tally from Tristan Horrigan (Mason County Eastern senior).
The second period saw the Badgers kill two penalties with the Raptors taking three.
“With all the time spent on special teams, it was hard to get much game flow going,” Zatloukal said. We did tally a power play goal with 2 seconds remaining in the period with a beautiful tip in goal by Young with an assist to Mirretti.”
In the third period was again physical with not a lot of game flow, Zatloukal said.
“We added our fourth goal of the night about 3 minutes in with Jacob Bielski (Manistee freshman) denting the twine with an assist to Higley. The raptors got on the board about a minute later. “
Joel Knobel (Hart junior) turned away 22 of the 23 shots he saw for the night, earning the win in goal.
“I was proud of our effort tonight,” Zatloukal said. “We started strong and were able to stay disciplined when the Raptors tried to get physical and knock us off our game. We didn’t sit back and continued to push play throughout the game.”
The Lakeshore Badgers is a cooperative team hosted by Manistee Area Public Schools and consisting of high school players from MAPS, Ludington, Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, Pentwater, Shelby and Hart.
The Badger’s next game is Saturday, Dec. 20 against Kalamazoo United at home at the West Shore Community Ice Arena on the campus of West Shore Community College. Puck drop is 11 a.m.
