HART — The Hart Pirates defeated the Mason County Central Spartans 59-41 Tuesday, Dec. 9.

First off, credit to them,” said MCC Coach Chris VanderHaag. “The first half was not pretty for us. They really put us on our heels, and we couldn’t find any rhythm offensively. They did a nice job taking away our first pass outlets in the front court, and that disrupted our pace early.”

VanderHaag said adjustments were made in the second half and the Spartans were able to even out the half.
“But we were already dealing with a 16-point hole,” he said. “Still, I’m proud of how we stepped up. Our defensive pressure looked much better, our guards had to be really physical tonight. It wasn’t easy.

“I also thought our younger guys got better tonight. Freshman Gannon Hansen and sophomore Michael Chye gave us some really good minutes—these kids showed they  are not afraid of the moment.”

Cole VanderHaag was a senior leader during the game.

“We were able to get him cleared out and get him downhill into the paint. From there he was able to draw fouls.  He went 13-for-14 from the free-throw line. Cole and Michael Chye continue to work well together, and even though they’re still figuring each other out, you can see their chemistry growing.

“We’ll learn from this game, take the positives, fix the areas we struggled in, and keep building.”

“Super sixth man Bryce “Missile” Vanderkodde made an immediate impact when he entered the game, including seven rebounds with four steals,” said Hart Coach Nick Bronsema.
