GULL LAKE — The Lakeshore Badgers played the Kalamazoo Eagles (Richland Gull Lake) on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Wings Event Center, earning a hard fought overtime win with a final score of 3-2.
Both teams were tentative and traded a few scoring chances in the first period.
“Our starting goalie Joel Knobel (Hart junior) turned away the five shots he saw in the period,” said Badgers Coach Brian Zatloukal. “Owen Adair (MCC sophomore) scored his second goal of the season with about a minute remaining in the first period to send us to the locker room leading 1-0.”
The second period saw the Eagles gain some momentum scoring a short handed goal about five minutes into the period.
“We again traded chances in what was a physical game, but we were unable to score in the period,” Zatloukal said. “The Eagles scored their second of the night with just under 4 minutes remaining in the period, sending us to to the second intermission trailing 2-1.
“In the third period, the Eagles played strong defensively and were very conservative, leading to limited changes for us. We made a change in goal for the third period, electing to bring Brockton Jabrocki (MCC sophomore) into the contest and were able to build momentum as the period wore on. We were able to break through and tie the game with four minutes remaining in regulation with another tally on the weekend by Adrian Lundberg (LHS sophomore), bringing his season total to 6.
“The pace for the remainder of regulation was high and physical, with much of the time spent in the Eagles zone.
“We carried play in overtime with the Eagles registering zero shots on goal in the period. Jacob Bielski (Manistee freshman) putting home a rebound for the game winner 1:46 into the extra period.
“I was proud of our team’s ability to compete and fight back against an opponent who played a strong defensive system and was very hungry looking for their first win of the season. This was not an easy win for us but will be a game we can learn and improve from.”
The win brings the Badgers’ record to 5-6 on the season.
The Lakeshore Badgers is a cooperative team hosted by Manistee Area Public Schools and consisting of high school players from MAPS, Ludington, Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, Pentwater, Shelby and Hart.
The Badgers’ next game is on Friday, Dec. 12 at the Mid Michigan Raptors (co-op host Mt. Pleasant).
