SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central High School freshman Colin Sullivan has been named first chair trombonist for the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association’s All-State Jazz Band.

To qualify for the band, Sullivan, the son of Tim Sullivan of Scottville, had to submit a 10-minute recorded audition which included an etude, a series of scales and a sight-read piece. An average of 2,500 students audition for the 400 seats in the MSBOA’s five all-state ensembles.

Sullivan is the lead trombonist in the MCC Jazz Band, Wind Symphony, and Marching Band. He is also a member of the MCC pep band, West Shore Community College Jazz I and II, WSCC Wind Symphony, and the West Shore Civic Band. He has also performed with the Scottville Clown Band and the Shelby High School Jazz Band.

“He’s a very talented musician and has definitely earned the opportunity to perform in this year’s all state jazz band,” said Brian Parent, MCC director of bands.

“I’m extremely proud of Colin,” said Ted Malt, WSCC director of performing arts and professor of music studies. “His work ethic is second to none. He is a valued member of our WSCC Wind Symphony, as well as Jazz Band I and II. I’m especially excited that Colin has had the opportunity to work with world-renowned jazz trombonist Michael Dease, professor of jazz trombone at Michigan State University.

In January, 2026, the students will assemble for two and half days of rehearsal with nationally recognized conductors. A concert will then be held at the Michigan Music Conference held Jan. 22-24 in Grand Rapids.
