After landing on reservoir, plane slides down embankment
PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — A plane piloted by a 61-year-old Issaquah, Washington man with an 83-year-old Muskegon man aboard as passenger crashed in the area of the Ludington Pumped Storage plant and slid down an embankment Saturday afternoon, Nov. 8, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
The pilot and the passenger were not injured, said Sheriff Cole.
“At 2:13 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, emergency crews were called to the 3500 block of South Lakeshore Drive in the area of the Ludington Pumped Storage plant regarding an ‘iPhone crash detection’ alert,” stated Cole in a press release issued Sunday morning. “While responding to the call, the Mason/Oceana County 911 Center received a call from the pilot reporting the crash and that there were no injuries.
“The pilot, a 61-year-old Issaquah, Washington man, reported to deputies that he was flying to Ludington from Fremont, Michigan, and between 2,700 feet and 3,500 feet the plane’s engine ‘seized.’ The pilot reported turning the aircraft into the wind and started to descend.
“The pilot made a controlled landing on top of the Ludington Pumped Storage reservoir. After landing, the aircraft slid down the embankment, coming to rest at the bottom of the hill on the west side of the reservoir.
“The pilot, nor his passenger, an 83-year-old Muskegon, Michigan man, reported any injuries, and there were no fuel leaks reported or observed.
“The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified, and the case will be turned over to federal authorities.”
Assisting the Mason County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were troopers from the Michigan State Police Hart Post and Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officers.
