VICTORY TOWNSHIP — Three Summit Technical Center criminal justice students were honored today for their volunteerism during the recent traffic detour through Scottville. The three students are all students of Mason County Central High School and include Landon Angst, a senior, and Caden Kane and Noah Gonzalez, both juniors. The three students volunteered to become crossing guards at the intersection of Reinberg Avenue and Broadway Street while State Street/US 10 traffic was detoured through that neighborhood during the recent Scottville water main replacement on East State Street.
“When the school reached out to us to ask if we could assist these three stepped up without hesitation,” said Chrysten Gregory, Summit Technical Center public safety and protective services instructor.
The technical center, formerly known as Career & Technical Education (CTE) is operated by the West Shore Educational Service District through a millage paid by property owners in Mason, Lake, and Oceana counties and available to high school students in grades 11 and 12. Manistee County students also participate through tuition. The criminal justice program is housed at the West Shore Community College Recreation Center.
Angst, Kane and Gonzalez spent about a month, each morning and afternoon, safely crossing pedestrians at the intersection.
“We are very thankful that these three stepped up, putting themselves at risk, in order for our students to safely walk to school each morning and afternoon,” said MCC Superintendent Jeff Mount. “These three are great examples of the citizenship we try to convey to our students here. We are very proud of them.”
The students were praised and presented thank you gifts and certificates from MCC, the City of Scottville, Michigan Department of Transportation, the West Shore ESD, and Mason County Sheriff’s Office.
