SCOTTVILLE — FiveCAP, Inc. is offering The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides residents with access to essential food groups.
“Buying food staples at the grocery store can quickly exhaust the budget of low-income families, especially given the high cost of items like fruit, vegetables and protein,” said Mary Trucks, executive director of FiveCAP.
Trucks said families can stretch their grocery budget further by participating in TEFAP.
FiveCAP, Inc. will be holding its quarterly TEFAP distribution on Thursday, November 6, 2025 in Lake, Manistee, Mason and Newaygo counties. The program provides food every three months to income-eligible households.
“TEFAP is an important piece to us because, unlike our other food program, it is open to residents of all ages,” Trucks said. “Also, the income guidelines for TEFAP are not as low as many other programs, opening it up to a wider population.”
To qualify for TEFAP, household income must be at or below 300 percent of poverty, which is $46,950 for a one-person household and increases by $16,500 for each additional member of the household.
Having non-perishable items that can be stored and saved for when they’re needed is an added benefit of the food distributed through TEFAP.
