West Shore School News is a presentation of West Shore Educational Service District in partnership with Mason County Press and Oceana County Press.
Two area second grade teachers recently each received $2,200 Classroom Literacy Grants from TalentFirst. The grants have allowed the teachers to purchase books for a classroom library and also for the purchase of shelves. The grants were facilitated through the West Shore Educational Service District.
Receiving the grants were Brenda Sommerfeldt at Walkerville Public Schools’ Elementary and Becky Alway, at Mason County Central’s Scottville Elementary.
TalentFirst is a Grand Rapids based organization, described often as an “innovation think tank” that was developed to address economic development challenges faced in west Michigan.
“At TalentFirst, we believe deeply in the power of early literacy to shape futures, and we are honored to partner with educators like you who are working tirelessly to ensure every child has the opportunity to become a confident, lifelong reader,” said Lisa Hungerford, TalentFirst director of education innovation.
