October 17, 2025

GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 30-year-old Scottville man was arrested by Mason County sheriff’s deputies following a high-speed chase Thursday morning, Oct. 16, during which the suspect allegedly threw what appeared to be a handgun out the vehicle window, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

After reaching speeds of 95-100 mph, the suspect’s vehicle hit several trees, and he fled on foot, said the sheriff. The man was captured, and a pistol magazine was found in his pants pocket, along with suspected cocaine in his vehicle.

“On Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025 at 2:35 a.m., a Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted a traffic stop on US 31 and Forest Trail in Mason County’s Grant Township, for a speeding violation,” stated Sheriff Cole in a press release. “The suspect failed to stop and fled.

“The suspect vehicle turned westbound on Forest Trail from US 31, reaching speeds of 95-100 mph west of Quarterline Road when the deputy lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle. A second deputy spotted the suspect vehicle on Morton Road near Forest Trail and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle drove around the patrol car and fled back eastbound on Forest Trail. At US 31, the vehicle failed to make a turn and ran off the road striking several trees. The driver then fled on foot. The suspect was chased down on foot and captured,” stated Sheriff Cole.

“During the chase, the suspect threw what deputies believed to be a handgun from the vehicle. A pistol magazine was found in the suspect’s pants pocket. Suspected cocaine was also found in the vehicle. A 30-year-old Scottville, Michigan man was arrested and lodged in the Mason County Jail.”
