SCOTTVILLE — The unveiling of the latest addition to the Mason County Sculpture Trail will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18 at noon when the unveiling of “The Big Noise” sculpture takes place at the recently renovated Scottville Optimist Park, located adjacent to the former Scottville Optimist Building.

The sculpture and park renovations are projects led by the Scottville Downtown Development Authority.

“The Big Noise” is the creation of Scottville area artist and filmmaker Harold David Cronk. The sculpture celebrates the town’s most famous ambassadors, the Scottville Clown Band, and its long agricultural heritage, while playing homage to many of the people, places and events that have been part of Scottville’s history.

The unveiling ceremony will feature presentations from members of the DDA, Scottville Clown Band, Mason County Historical Society and others who have been part of its creation.

Cronk is a 1993 graduate of Mason County Central High School and a graduate of West Shore Community College. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Central Michigan University, where he majored in art and K-12 education with an emphasis in sculpture. After a stint of teaching high school art, he decided to follow his dreams of making films and moved to Los Angeles, later returning to Mason County but continuing his successful film career. Among the movies he has directed is “God’s Not Dead,” one of the highest ever grossing Christian films.

Cronk said the Scottville sculpture will be a unique part of the Mason County Sculpture Trail, symbolizing Scottville’s individual character.

“There are several artists who have had an indelible influence on my work,” Cronk said. “Alexander Calder, Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak and Walt Disney are just a few of my favorites. For me, the common thread drawn through the heart of each of theses amazing artists is their unrelenting embrace of their child-like spirit. In a world wrought with strife and political upheaval, we desperately need artists who afford us a few moments of escape and maybe even a smile or two.”
