Suspect nearly hits patrol car head-on while fleeing from police

October 6, 2025

SCOTTVILLE — A 34-year-old Custer man nearly hit a police car head-on during a high-speed chase Thursday morning, Oct. 2, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“On Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025, at 7:50 a.m., Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported domestic violence call at the Thornwild Apartments in the City of Scottville,” stated Sheriff Cole. “The suspect in the call, a 34-year-old Custer, Michigan man, had fled the scene prior to deputies arriving.

“During the investigation, it was determined there was enough probable cause to arrest the male, if located,” said Sheriff Cole. “At 11:46 a.m., a sheriff’s deputy patrolling the area of South Tuttle Road between US 10 and First Street spotted a vehicle parked off the road on a two-track that matched that of the suspect vehicle from the earlier assault. As the deputy walked up to check on this vehicle, the suspect sat up in the vehicle. The deputy recognized him as the suspect and told him he was under arrest. The suspect started the vehicle and fled.

“The suspect fled south of Tuttle and then eastbound on First Street,” said the sheriff. “A second deputy was traveling westbound on First Street with his emergency lights and siren activated when the suspect crossed over into the path of the approaching deputy. This caused the deputy to run off the road to avoid a head-on crash.

“The pursuit then went south of Custer Road — at speeds of 80 mph — to Wilson, to Indian Trail when the suspect vehicle struck a tree. The suspect fled on foot. However, he did turn himself in on Saturday to the Mason County Jail on an unrelated probation violation warrant.

“He remains lodged in the Mason County Jail pending additional charges related to the domestic assault and vehicle chase,” said Sheriff Cole.

This was one of two high-speed police chases in Mason County over a two-day period. Read related story here: https://www.masoncountypress.com/2025/10/06/woman-on-motorcy…-hits-patrol-car/ ‎
