Herbert Schaner

Herbert Charles Schaner, 89, of Free Soil, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

Known affectionately as Herb, he was born on May 13, 1936, in Hart, to the late Albert and Edna (Wilde) Schaner. Herb was married to Doris Jean Ohse on May 1, 1957. They shared many memorable years together until her passing on September 5, 2021. Herb lived a life marked by dedication to his craft, love for his family, and easy going and witty nature.

Herb graduated from Mason County Central High School in 1955 and began his career as a cook for the C&O Railroad. However, his true vocation was carpentry, which he pursued with passion and precision. Herb worked as an independent carpenter before joining the Michigan Carpenters Union, from which he retired in 1998.

Herb was a man of many interests, including playing the card game set-back with friends, where he was known for his “blood and guts”, yet playful style. He cherished the annual deer season, a time for bonding with his brother, Albert, who survives him. Herb’s storytelling, often about the “good old days,” captivated all who listened, bringing laughter and nostalgia to family gatherings.

An avid fan of old westerns, Herb enjoyed watching these films with his beloved pet companions, Blackie and Tiger. His woodworking skills flourished in retirement, allowing him to craft toys and items for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, treasures that continue to bring joy and are cherished reminders of his love and craftsmanship.

Herb is survived by his daughters, Kristine (Roland) Struve of Milan, and Connie (Jeffrey) Patulski of Free Soil; grandchildren, Andrew (Elisabeth) Struve of Monroe, Nathan Patulski and Tasha Baldwin of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Nicholas Patulski of Free Soil; great-grandchildren, twins John and Joseph Struve, Clare Struve, twins Wyatt and Hunter Patulski; brother, Albert Schaner of Dowagiac; sister-in-law, Mary Schulz; brother-in-law, Robert (Carla) Ohse; and many nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean (Ohse) Schaner; parents, Albert and Edna (Wilde) Schaner; son, Charles Schaner; and stepfather, George (Hienie) Schlee.

A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Simon Catholic Church in Ludington with Rev. Wayne B. Wheeler, Jr. presiding. Visitation will begin at 10am at the church.
