SCOTTVILLE — While Mason County Central School District students had a day off of school, the school’s faculty and staff spent part of the day learning how to keep kids and fellow employees safe.

Mason County Sheriff’s Dep. David Barnett speaks with MCC Upper Elementary staff.
Mason County Sheriff’s Office school resource deputies, along with other area law enforcement officers, provided training scenarios on what to do in the case of an active shooter. Known as alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate (ALICE), the training teaches a philosophy of protecting oneself, but also, if needed, fighting back.
Local schools have been training under ALICE for the past 10 years.
“This is just another layer of protecting our students and protecting our staff,” MCC Superintendent Jeff Mount said. “This training prepares our staff on what to do in the event something like this were to happen. The training is then taught to our students as well.
Mason County Central School District has taken the lead in school safety.
“This is part of the overall commitment of our board of education, administration, faculty and staff to protect our MCC community,” Mount said. “Naturally, the next step is to upgrade our buildings, which can be accomplished by passing the upcoming Nov. 4 bond proposal.”
The Nov. 4 bond proposal is requesting district voters to approval a 2.15 mills renewal which will fund much needed building and grounds repairs and enhance safety and security. The bond does not call for a tax increase.
