LUDINGTON — The S.S. Badger’s stern gate was damaged while the car ferry was docking Wednesday evening, Sept. 17. Witnesses stated the boat’s stern struck the S.S. Spartan’s bow, causing the stern gate to be pushed inward toward the Badger’s car deck. There appears to be a large scrape on the Spartan’s bow.
No injuries were reported.
According to a press release from LMC, service to Manitowoc, Wis. is expected to resume, as scheduled, Thursday, Sept. 18 at 9 a.m.
The extent of the damage to the SS Badger’s sea gate is currently being assessed by marine engineers to determine the necessary repairs and to ensure the vessel’s continued safe operation, according to the press release.
“We are grateful that no one was harmed in this incident,” said LMC spokesman Thom Hawley. “The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. We are working with the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of this collision and to implement any necessary preventative measures.”
The SS Badger’s passenger and vehicle ferry service between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin, will resume Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 9 a.m.
Crews from Lake Michigan Carferry and Al Bufka Construction have been at the dock repairing the stern gate.
The S.S. Spartan has been moored since 1979.
Crews use a welding torch on the stern gate.
