LUDINGTON — Women Who Care of Mason County recently donated $8,880 to HELP Ministries to assist with expenses of medical transport.
Hands Extended Loving People, 910 E. Tinkham Ave., is a non-profit organization with a fundamental mission to help people when other agencies cannot. It helps provide furniture, appliances, household goods, kitchenware, and also help with rent. But, it also provides non-emergency medical transportation.
According to Larry Lange, executive director of HELP, volunteers transport people to and from medical appointments about 30 times a month; this may also include transporting people back from the hospital. While initially the service drove people to appointments in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and other cities, the organization is seeing more demand for local transportation, Lange said.
To date, the organization has provided over 250 rides, over 8,900 miles. Drivers are reimbursed for their mileage and sometimes meals.
Women Who Care of Mason County meets quarterly.
Women Who Care meets quarterly at the United Methodist Church of Ludington in Pere Marquette Township. During its meetings, local non-profit charitable organizations are nominated for pitches from one of the attendees. Three groups are picked at random and the spokesman has five minutes to give a pitch. The group then votes. Each woman in attendance vows to donate a set amount the organization that is chosen.
