FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — On Sept. 9, 2013, Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield, 43, was killed after he was shot by a teenaged driver on a routine traffic stop on Custer Road. Every year on that date, a ceremony is held at the location where the murder took place. The event is organized by Fountain Area Fire Department firefighter Shirley Chancellor, who was one of the initial first responders on the scene that evening.
