Ludington man, Kalkaska man arrested for construction fraud

MANISTEE — Scot Eric Latimer, 52, of Ludington, was arrested by the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office on several felony charges “following multiple complaints of construction projects where he accepted money or drew money from construction loans to perform construction work which was either never started or never completed,” said Manistee County Sheriff Brian Gutowski.

According to Sheriff Gutowski, Latimer was arrested on the following charges: two counts felony false pretenses with intent to defraud $100,000 or more; one count of felony false pretenses with intent to defraud $50,000-$100,000; one count of felony false pretenses with intent to defraud $20,000 -$50,000 and one count of felony larceny by conversion $1,000-$20,000.

Potter

Kit Alden Potter, 44, of Kalkaska was arrested on similar charges, including six counts of felony larceny by conversion $1,000-$20,000; two counts of felony larceny by conversion $20,000 or more and one count felony nonsufficient funds check, said the sheriff.

The sheriff’s office shared the information in a press release issued Monday, Aug. 25. 

“The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office is sharing this release regarding several contractor fraud complaints handled by our detectives. It is our hope that by informing our community of these incidents it will increase awareness, potentially identify additional victims, and prevent future incidents. 

“We would like to encourage anyone who is hiring a contractor to conduct a thorough vetting process to ensure the contractor is reputable. We also encourage actively monitoring construction accounts and project progress during the contract.”
