LUDINGTON — On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Mason County Historical Society honored the Sanders family, owners of Sanders Meats of Custer. This year, the company celebrates its 100th anniversary.
Sanders Meats was founded by Joesph T. Sanders in 1925, delivering homemade products in a Ford Model T. On Saturday, the descendants of Joe and Vera Sanders gathered at the Mason County Historical Society’s downtown Ludington building where they presented a donation to the society’s Legacy Campaign, contributing to the capital expenses of the building, which is home of the Rose Hawley Archives.
A legacy placard was revealed that pays tribute to the family. Mason County Historical Society Board of Directors President James Jensen gave a presentation on the family’s history in Mason County. Dr. William Anderson, past president of the Society, presented, on behalf of the Historical Society of Michigan, a commemorative plaque, to the family, honoring the business’s centennial.
Following the ceremony, Sanders hot dogs and bratwursts were served to the guests.
The Mason County Historical Society is a non-profit charitable organization that was founded in 1937. It receives no governmental funds. The society operates Historic White Pine Village, the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, the Rose Hawley Archives and the Mason County Emporium & Sweet Shop.
