A pickup truck pulling a trailer hit a power pole, bringing down power lines and causing a power outage in the area, after an SUV pulled into its path.

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — Four people were hurt, two of whom were critically injured, in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Sugar Grove and Schoenherr roads Thursday, Aug. 7, shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“Preliminary findings suggest a 2025 Chevy Equinox, driven by a 74-year-old female from Jenison, Michigan, pulled up to the stop sign northbound on Schoenherr Road at Sugar Grove Road; stopped; and then pulled into the path of an eastbound 2025 Chevy Silverado pickup truck pulling a trailer,” states Sheriff Cole in a press release. “The pickup truck struck the passenger vehicle in the driver’s side door. Following the crash, the passenger vehicle rolled over, and the pickup struck a power pole, bringing down power lines and causing a power outage in the area,” stated the sheriff.

“The 74-year-old Jenison, Michigan woman and her front seat passenger, a 41-year-old Saint Joseph, Michigan woman, were both critically injured and were transported to a Grand Rapids area hospital for further care. An 8-year-old girl, also in the passenger car was injured and treated at Corewell Hospital in Ludington. The driver of the pickup truck, a 34-year-old Twin Lake, Michigan woman, was also injured and treated for minor injuries.

“Neither speed nor alcohol appear to have been a factor in the crash, and all occupants were properly restrained,” said Sheriff Cole.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team. Fountain Area Fire and Rescue, Custer Fire and Life EMS assisted at the scene, and Mason County Victims Service Unit assisted at the hospital.
