The Scottville Clown Band
SCOTTVILLE — The show must go on! Even though this year’s Scottville Fall Celebration has been cancelled, due to water main/street construction in town, the Scottville Clown Band the Western Michigan Old Engine Club have decided to hold a Harvest Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the club’s show grounds at Scottville Riverside Park.
“The Scottville Clown Band has played consecutively in Scottville since 1947, with the exception of the pandemic in 2020. When we received word that the Fall Celebration had been cancelled this year, it was just not acceptable,” said Rob Alway, treasurer of the Clown Band and a resident of Scottville. “We talked to the leadership of the Western Michigan Old Engine Club and decided that we would hold our own event.”
In recent years, the Clown Band has performed two summer concerts in its home town, a Patriotic Concert prior to Independence Day at the Scottville Clown Band Shell, and the Fall Celebration, in mid-September. A planned renovation of the band shell and its grounds caused the band to move its Patriotic Concert to Ludington Waterfront Park.
The Harvest Celebration will be a fundraiser to benefit the Mason County Central music program. It will take place from noon to 4 p.m.
In addition to the Scottville Clown Band, the Mason County Central Marching Band will also perform and the MCC Jazz Band may tentatively perform as well. The Western Michigan Old Engine Club will also have equipment on display and R&T Colossal Kitchen food truck will be on site. There will also be touch-a-truck displays. Other exhibitors are encouraged to participate.
“If anyone would like to set up an art or craft booth, hold a fun activity for kids or adults, perform music, or create another activity, we would welcome that,” Alway said. “This will be a grassroots celebration.”
Anyone who is selling an item is asked to make a minimum donation of $25 to the Scottville Clown Band’s Student Services Program, which will benefit the MCC music program.
The first MCC band performance will be at 1 p.m. followed by the Clown Band at 2 p.m. Free will offerings will be made during the performances.
Additionally, there will be a brief unveiling ceremony of the Scottville sculpture at the Scottville Clown Band Shell grounds at noon. Due to construction at that facility and construction around town, there will be no other event there (though the Clown Band may play a song or two there before moving to Riverside Park).
