LUDINGTON — Firefighters responded to a fire at a house under construction at 503 W. Haight St. today, Monday, July 28, 2025. Ludington Fire Department was dispatched at 10:52 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters from Ludington Fire Department reported heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the house, particularly on its west side. The nearly-completed house is on the northwest corner of Haight and Lewis streets on the development site of the former Lakeview Elementary School.
After being on scene for about 20 minutes, assistance for air pack personnel was called from Pere Marquette Fire Department and Hamlin Fire Department. Also on scene was Ludington Police Department and Life EMS.
A firefighter was transported by ambulance to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital and was being treated for heat exhaustion. Temperatures were in the high 80s.
According to Ludington Police Chief Chris Jones, a preliminary investigation identified the mechanical room as the likely point of origin. A Michigan State Police fire marshal has been contacted and will conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The house suffered fire, smoke and water damage.
