SCOTTVILLE — Six local first responders were recognized by the State of Michigan Monday evening during the Scottville City Commission meeting. The six men, including two Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies, a Michigan State Police Trooper, and three Scottville Fire Department firefighters, were presented proclamations from the Michigan State Legislature and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, presented by State Sen. Jon Bumstead, for their actions the night of April 7, 2025 when a fire at Glendale Apartment displaced multiple people.

Mason County sheriff Sgt. Adam Claveau and Dep. Matt Moss were among the first to arrive on the scene. Upon their arrival, seven people were trapped on three separate second-story balconies, unable to escape due to intense flames engulfing the first floor apartments.

Claveau and Moss were joined by Trooper Hyder Mansour, and Scottville Fire Dept. First Lt. Eric Buter and firefighters Nicolas Contreras and Bill Voght.

Working in close coordination, they made multiple rescue attempts to safely evacuate each of the trapped residents. Through their swift, strategic, and courageous efforts, all seven individuals were successfully brought to safety.

Life EMS and Scottville Fire Department provided prompt medical care at the scene to those suffering from smoke inhalation, reflecting the seamless collaboration and dedication of all emergency personnel involved.

Emergency units that assisted at the fire included Scottville Fire Department, Custer Fire Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, and Ludington Fire Department. Also assisting on scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Ludington Police Department, Life EMS, Scottville Department of Public Works, and Fountain Area Fire Department Auxiliary.
