SCOTTVILLE —Mason County Central Upper Elementary fifth grade student Ariel Walters LeClair was the recipient of the school’s 13th annual Courage of Gabe Award, presented today during the end-of-the-year awards ceremony. The award is named after 2021 MCC graduate Gabe Sessions, who was the first recipient of the award. Sessions, who had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rapidly progressive form of muscular dystrophy, passed away on Nov. 27, 2024.
The award is presented annually to a student who has overcome challenges during his/her tenure at the Upper Elementary.
“You are proof today that with courage, hope, belief in yourself and hard work, there is nothing you can’t accomplish,” Principal Kevin Kimes said. “We are all so proud of you, Ariel.”
Today was the last day of school for Mason County Central, which had to extend its school year due to snow and ice days in the winter.
