GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 23-year-old Manistee man, who fled from police in a vehicle, was stopped when a Mason County sheriff’s deputy successfully executed a PIT maneuver, bringing the chase to an end, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
Mason County deputies were called to a campsite in the Manistee National Forest Campground regarding a domestic assault with strangulation Sunday, June 8, at 8:47 p.m.
“While responding to the call, deputies were alerted that the suspect had left in a vehicle,” said Sheriff Cole. “A deputy spotted the suspect vehicle traveling northbound on Quarterline Road south of Hoague Road. At Countyline and Quarterline roads, the deputy attempted a car stop. However, the suspect vehicle fled eastbound on Countyline and then northbound on Maple Road, into Manistee County, reaching speeds of 75 mph.
“The suspect vehicle attempted a turn down a two-track — at which point, the deputy successfully executed a PIT maneuver bringing the chase to an end.”
The suspect was arrested at the scene on charges of domestic assault by strangulation and fleeing and eluding police. The victim, who is a Ludington female, was treated by Life EMS at the scene for minor injuries.
A PIT maneuver (precision immobilization technique) is a law enforcement pursuit tactic in which a pursuing vehicle forces another vehicle to turn sideways abruptly by striking the pursued car at an angle near its rear, causing the second car to spin out and come to an unplanned stop.
