SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central High School Forensic Head Coach Katarina Moore has been named the Michigan Speech Coaches, Inc. (MSCI) Individual Events Coach of the Year.
The announcement was made during the MSCI Mackinac Conference and Tournament held recently on Mackinac Island.
To celebrate this year’s forensics season, and to help raise funds for the award-winning program, a showcase event, 4N6 Night, will be held on Friday, May 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the A.O. Carlson Gymnasium at MCC High School.
This was Moore’s first year as head coach, taking over for Tom Ritchert, who retired last year. The 13-person team’s season ended with a state champion, Jacob Sailor, along with a state finalist, Helena Snell, who finished third in the state. Additionally, several team members qualified for the state semifinals.
The team also earned three sweepstakes trophies. Its season included a first place at the Michigan State University tournament, second place at the Grand Rapids Christian School tournament, and third place at the Portage Northern High School tournament. The team had finalists at all six invitational tournaments held this season.
“Outside of trophies and placements, we have worked very hard to promote a positive team environment and model for the students what collaborative learning looks like,” Moore said. “I believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to do forensic and I believe that we are better when we are working to support one another, which is a mindset that is being fostered within my team and through partnerships with other schools.”
Moore’s mother, Laura Moore, is a forensics coach for The Roeper School in southeast Michigan and was named assistant coach of the year.
“Speech and Debate activities are the cornerstone of all other work that is done throughout someone’s entire life,” Moore said. “Forensic can have a life-long impact on each and every participant, as it teaches skills that are universally needed. I have seen students who were outgoing theatre stars and students who barely spoke a word benefit just the same from forensic. Debate, forensic, and theatre foster a love of the arts and can be the jumping off point for countless other professions outside of the arts. Students who engage in speech and debate activities are given the opportunity to become more confident, well-rounded individuals later in their lives, and we need to provide every chance we can to welcome more people in to our community.”
In addition, Moore was also awarded the Ludus Professional Development Grant, provided by Ludus LLC in conjunction with MSCI that provides for the opportunity for members to pursue their passion project with financial support from Ludus.
During the 4N6 Night fundraiser, the public will have the opportunity to see student performances and to help the program.
