LUDINGTON — Drizzle, wind and 48 degree temperatures didn’t stop the estimated 400 volunteers who showed up Saturday morning to plant the 38th Ludington Petunia Parade. Volunteers began at 8 a.m., picking up their block’s petunias from the staging area at Rotary Park. The parade consists of 32,500 red, white and blue petunias along portions of Ludington Avenue, Loomis Street, and Ferry Street.
The Ludington Petunia Parade was started in 1987 by Ellery and Sue Sabin. It is a non-profit organization, funded by private donations and governed by a nine-person all-volunteer board of directors.
The petunias are grown beginning in late winter at Gustafson’s Greenhouse in Summit Township.
The Ludington Petunia Parade includes 40 blocks of flowers that stretch along Ludington Avenue from Lakeshore Drive east into Pere Marquette Township and then along the Ludington Municipal Marina.
