Obituary: Edward T. Chmielewski, 89, of Ludington

Edward T. Chmielewski, 89, departed this life on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at home with his wife and partner of 40 years, Barbara (Forgue).

Ed is also survived by his son, Edward (Donna); grandson, Alex; daughter in law, Susan (Steinhoff); grandchildren Matthew (Jennifer), Kristyn (Andrew) Heitzman; great grandson Grayson Heitzman; blended family David (Kate Hahn) Forgue; grandson Thomas Forgue. He is survived by his siblings Robert (Alyce) and Nancy (Gary) Pitchford, sister in law Ruth (Contreras), and many nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Sophie (Pulaski), ex-wife Arlene (Korytowski); son Ronald; brother, Donald and several loyal canine and feline companions.

Ed was born September 5, 1935 in Chicago.  He had a successful career in the elevator industry as a proud member of IUEC Local #2, culminating in owning his own company with his longtime friend, John Diguido.  Ed retired in 1990 to begin a new life in Ludington, where he and Barbara “bought the farm”.  Here Ed pursued his love of woodworking, building, and raising a variety of animals. He created an 80 acre wildlife habitat, planting thousands of trees and restoring wetlands.

Ed “the Llama Guy” raised over 45 llamas which he shared with the community as a 4H leader of 15 years (The Hummers), participating in parades, visiting schools, libraries, nursing homes, other local events, and hikes at the farm.

Ed is fondly remembered as a good man who left this world a better place. He will be missed.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.  Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
