CUSTER — The Michigan Department of Transportation installed temporary school speed zone signs today, Friday, March 7, in the village while awaiting permanent, powered signs. The speed on US 10 in a portion of the village, near Mason County Eastern Schools, will be reduced from 50 mph to 35 mph during the hours of 7:45 to 8:15 a.m., 11:50 a.m to 12:20 p.m. and 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. The permanent signs will include blinkers that will light up during those hours.
The school speed zone signs have been planned for several months. According to Steve Wessels, manager of the Mason County Road Commission, the delay had been finding an appropriate power-source and also the weather. Wessels spoke during a public forum at the Custer Village Council meeting last Monday, based on information he had received from MDOT.
The signs installation occurs two weeks after 16-year-old Samantha “Sammi” Jo Bateson, a junior at MCE, was killed in a two vehicle crash at the intersection of US 10 and Main Street, in front of the school.
