Fern Stewart

Fern Phyllis Stewart, 92, of Scottville, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.  Fern was born on October 15, 1931 in Groton, South Dakota, the daughter of Jack and Elfrieda (Barthle) Huffman.  On April 7, 1961 she was wed to Gordon Stewart at the Ludington United Methodist Church and they celebrated 59 years together before Gordon preceded her death on July 4, 2020.  Fern was also preceded in death by her parents; her son Larry Brant; her daughter-in-law Annette Stewart; her infant grandson; her granddaughter Kristi Stewart; her sister Treva Brown; and her brothers Jack, Orville “Buster”, and Henry Huffman.

Fern worked as a cook at various restaurants and cafés in the area and also worked in sales at Schohl’s Jewelry, JC Penney, and Montgomery Wards.  She was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Scottville, and often helped out the Scottville Optimist Club with bingo on Wednesday nights and during Scottville Harvest Festival.

Fern will be greatly missed by her children Nancy Flynn-Tinsley of Austin, Minn., Doug Stewart of Marble Falls, Texas, Terry Stewart of Turtle Lake, Wis., and Edie Jensen of Scottville; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; her brother Charles (Maryerlene) Huffman of Reed Point, Mont.; her stepbrother Ken  (Sylvia) Goodwin of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held for Fern at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with her pastor, Rev. Kenneth Williamson officiating.  Friends may meet with her family on Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.  Fern will be laid to rest next to her beloved Gordon at the Bachelor Cemetery in Sheridan Township following the services.  Those who wish to remember Fern with a memorial donation are asked to please consider Our Savior Lutheran Church.
