Suspect tased after swinging ax at deputy

August 26, 2024

BRANCH TOWNSHIP —A 53-year-old Manistee man was tased by a Mason County sheriff’s deputy after he allegedly ran at the deputy’s patrol car, swinging an ax at him Sunday night, Aug. 25, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

The incident arose while deputies were transporting two suspects that they had just arrested to the Mason County Jail in an unrelated matter.

Mason County deputies were called to the 6900 block of East Butters Street at 11:45 p.m.  for an “active assault,” said Sheriff Cole. “When deputies, arrived an intoxicated male subject confronted deputies, screaming and acting aggressively with them. It was learned this male had reportedly assaulted another subject at the residence. While attempting to arrest this male, he fought with deputies and had to be taken to the ground in order to make the arrest. During this arrest, a female subject attempted to assault deputies as well and fought with them. Both were arrested. A 30-year-old Fountain, Michigan man was arrested for assault and resisting and obstructing, and a 31-year-old Fountain, Michigan woman was arrested for assaulting a police officer and resisting and obstructing.

“After deputies affected the arrest on Butters Street and were transporting the two arrestees to the jail, a subject — unrelated to this call — was nearly struck by a patrol car on Marshall Rd., who was walking in the roadway swinging an ax. A third deputy, who was not transporting an arrestee, stopped due to the subject blocking the road. At this time, the suspect ran at the patrol car and deputy swinging the ax at the deputy. The deputy exited his patrol car and tasered the suspect, who was then taken into custody. The 53-year-old Manistee, Michigan man was arrested on a charge of felony assault on a law enforcement officer. The deputy was uninjured.”
