Invasive species workshop to be held July 19

LUDINGTON — An invasive species field day workshop will be held on Friday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cartier Park woods, West Slagle Drive. The event is presented by Mason-Lake Conservation District, Manistee Conservation District, North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area and U.S. Forest Service.

The workshop is free for those attending. Lunch will be provided, compliments of the Michigan Tree Farm Committee.

During the field day attendees will learn about invasive species, their effects, and how to control them.  Specific topics will include identification and impacts of invasive species at Cartier Park, common tools and treatment methods used to treat invasive species, follow-up restoration techniques.  Featured speakers will include Josh Shields, FAP forester, arborist, and wildlife biologist with the Mason-Lake and Manistee conservation districts; Mason-Lake Conservation District staff including Bri Jasinski, hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) project manager and other members of the HWA crew; Dani McGarry, executive director; Jon Bednarick, crew lead with North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area; and Carolyn Henne, botanist with the USFS.

Directions to the site: Bryant Road to Rath Avenue, north to Slagle Drive, then west.

Those wishing to attend are asked to register no later than July 12. There will be 2 continuing education credits for Certified Pesticide Applicators (Core, Forestry, Ornamental, or Right-of-Way).
