Firefighters quickly extinguish house fire

RIVERTON TOWNSHIP — Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a fire in a house at 2495 W. Meisenheimer Rd. Tuesday evening. Emergency units were initially dispatched to the scene at 9:03 p.m. and cleared at 10:16 p.m. Riverton Fire Chief Joe Cooper said the fire likely was caused by something cooking on a stove. He said heat got into a ceiling which caused mostly a lot of smoke.

“We had to tear down some ceiling tiles in order to stop the fire, but we were able to get it out pretty quickly,” Cooper said.

Riverton Fire Department was assisted by Pere Marquette Township Fire Department and Pentwater Fire Department.

As a precaution, Cooper requested that Great Lakes Energy shut the power off in the house.
