Firefighters quickly extinguish pole building fire

April 10, 2024

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a pole building fire Tuesday afternoon. Riverton Fire Department, Pere Marquette Fire Department and Ludington Fire Department were dispatched to the 5,000 block of Hawley Road, west of Pere Marquette Highway, about 4 p.m. for a report of a pole building on fire. Riverton Township Fire Chief Joe Cooper was with the first unit to arrive on scene.

“We didn’t see a lot of smoke coming from the building when we arrived, which is a good indicator that the fire hadn’t spread,” Cooper said. “We immediately put firefighters, with air packs, in the building and were able to find the fire and extinguish it.”

Cooper said he does not know the exact origin of the fire but said it was likely electrical. He said the structure and its contents were saved with some water and smoke damage to the building.

“It was the type of outcome we hope for,” Cooper said. “A few more minutes and it could have been much different.”
