WSCC Humankind Series to screen film “CODA”

WSCC News is presented by West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College’s Humankind series will host a viewing of the film “CODA” on Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at Center Stage Theater. This will be a free showing and everyone is welcome to attend.

The event is a part of Humankind’s theme of the year, “Inclusion: Conversations Around a Crowded Table,” focused on building empathy towards those different from us in order to help everyone feel like they belong and have a seat at the table.

Released in 2021, the film follows Ruby, a child of deaf adults (thus, the title “CODA”) through life as the the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family’s fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her passion at Berklee College of Music and her fear of abandoning her parents. The film won three Oscar Awards and several Sundance Film Festival awards.

“Film is a universal medium that speaks to all and relies on the inclusivity of voices and perspectives. Including deaf individuals not only enriches the art form but also reflects the diverse tapestry of human experience,” said Cara Mitchell, marketing and college relations coordinator. “There is an ever-growing need for diverse representation on screen and this is an excellent addition to this year’s Humankind theme.”

Humankind is WSCC’s arts and culture lecture series that consists of presentations, workshops, film series, art exhibitions, performing arts events, and much more. For more information about other events in the Humankind series, visit the West Shore website or contact humankind@westshore.edu.
