MCC forensics team sweeps first place in GR tourney

SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central High School’s forensics team recently earned a large win. Last weekend the team won first place sweeps in the small school category in the Grand Rapids Christian High School competition.

“This was a significant win because we are a small team of 12 while many of the competing teams have dozens of members,” said Tom Richert, forensics head coach. “We may be a small team but we certainly are competitive.”

In addition to the team taking first place, the team also took home one individual first place trophies: Elliette Thomas in the oratory category, out of 25 competitors. Holly Bowen earned sixth place in prose, out of 15 competitors.

The sweeps trophy is based on total team points accumulated. The team took sixth place overall, out of 14.

Richert is in his final year of coaching after 34 years of leading the MCC forensics team. The is scheduled for three more regular season competitions before regional and state competitions.
