Obituary: Doris Englebrecht, 85, of St. Ignace

Doris L. Englebrecht, 85, of St. Ignace, longtime resident of Custer and Riverton, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024.  Doris was born on October 4, 1938 at her family’s home in Scottville, the daughter of Peter and Bernice (Squires) Babbin and graduated from Scottville High School with the class of 1956.  On February 17, 1962 she wed D. Robert “Bob” Englebrecht and they have celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Doris was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Scottville where she served on the Altar Guild, Service Guild, Co-Chair of Vacation Bible School and as church secretary.  Doris also served as Sherman Township clerk for many years, drove bus for Mason County Central Schools, and worked as a cook for the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, preparing meals for inmates in the jail and later as secretary for the department, retiring in 2001.  She and Bob enjoyed their retirement together in Paradise, moving to St. Ignace in 2014.  She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Cheboygan.  Doris enjoyed spending time quilting, sewing, and was an avid reader.  She was a member of the Quilt Ministry at St. John Lutheran Church where the group are strong supporters of the Wounded Warriors Quilt Project.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Bernice; and her brothers John Babbin and Butch Babbin.

Along with her beloved husband Bob, Doris will be greatly missed by her children Robert (Michelle) Englebrecht of Central Lake, Mark (Corrina) Englebrecht of Custer, Diane (Shane Reed) Englebrecht of Ludington, and Dr. Amy (David VerHaag) Englebrecht of Park City, Utah; her grandchildren Mark (Kate) Englebrecht Jr. of Custer, Courtney (Shawn) Pomorski of Newaygo, Joel Englebrecht and Danielle Verbeke both of Custer, and Kylee Stark of Ludington; 10 precious great-grandchildren; her sister Patsy Strayer of Scottville; her sister-in-law Ruth Babbin of Ludington; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held for Doris at 11 a.m. on Saturday,  February 24 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Scottville, with her pastor, Rev. Michael Schaedig of St. John Lutheran Church, Cheboygan, officiating.  Burial will take place later this spring at Center Riverton Cemetery.  Friends may meet with Bob and his family during a time of visitation on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until time of service at Our Savior Lutheran Church.  Those who wish to remember Doris with a memorial donation are asked to please consider the Quilt Ministry of St. John Lutheran Church in Cheboygan, Our Savior Lutheran Church Library Fund, or Hospice of Cheboygan.
