Book walk, lantern walk this Saturday at state park

HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — “Star in the Jar” is the featured book for this Saturday’s lantern lit book walk at Ludington State from 6 to 8 p.m.

The lantern lit book walk is a cooperative venture between Ludington State Park, Friends of Ludington State Park, the Great Start Collaborative of the West Shore Educational Service District (WSESD) and the Great Start Parent Coalition.

Families with young children get a free copy of “Star in the Jar.” Start at the Warming Shelter to receive the book and other resources.

Placards with pages from the Sam Hay and Sarah Massini story will be placed along the one-mile trail lit with lanterns.

At the Amphitheater a MISTEM representative will have a telescope for visitors to view the night sky.

The walk is free as are the hot chocolate and marshmallows available for roasting at a campfire at the park amphitheater along the trail. Hitch Hiker Coffee will be selling hot beverages from its trailer near the warming shelter.

A Recreation Pass is required for vehicles entering the park.

If snow is sufficient – and that’s iffy at best — snowshoes may be borrowed on a first-come, first-served basis near the Warming Shelter. Or bring your own. If there isn’t sufficient snow, the lanterns are still lit for an enjoyable night walk.
