Driver uninjured after collision with train

SCOTTVILLE — An 87-year-old Scottville man was uninjured after a train hit his truck Monday evening at the railroad crossing on South Main Street. According to Scottville Police Department, the crash occurred about 9:55 p.m. when the man’s Toyota pickup truck was southbound on Main Street and apparently got caught inside the railroad crossing gate, which came down as the eastbound Marquette Rail train was approaching. Sgt. Katrina Skinner said the driver of the truck panicked and tried to drive out of the gate, but was unable to do so before the front passenger side of his vehicle was struck by the train. The truck then spun around and into the street.

Scottville Police Department was assisted on scene by Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police. Skinner said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The train engine did not sustain any major damage.
