Winter storm watch issued for Mason County

Heavy snow in excess of 8 inches is possible, and winds could gust as high as 50 mph.

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a winter storm watch for Mason County that is in effect from Friday morning, Jan. 12, to Saturday afternoon, Jan. 13.

Heavy snow in excess of 8 inches is possible, and winds could gust as high as 50 mph.

Other counties included in the winter storm watch include: Oceana, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Newaygo, Mecosta, Isabella, Muskegon, Montcalm, Gratiot, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson.

NWS issued the winter storm watch at 3:39 p.m. Wednesday, Jan 10.

“Travel could become very difficult,” states NWS. “Widespread blowing snow may significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and cause power outages.

“Bitter cold Arctic air and additional heavy lake effect snow will follow this system. Hazardous winter weather will likely continue through the remainder of the weekend into early next week.

“Slippery conditions and delays are possible for the Thursday morning (Jan. 11) commute. A quick hitting, widespread 1-3 inch snowfall late tonight and early Thursday combined with sub freezing temperatures may lead to slippery road conditions for the Thursday morning commute. Plan for the possibility of slower than average drive times and delays.”
