Conservation District to host winter grower meeting

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — The Mason-Lake Conservation District will host its winter grower meeting on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024 at the Conference and Administration Building at West Shore Community College. The free event will be held 9 a.m. to noon and is open to the public, though topics are geared towards farmers and forest owners.

Participants are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes early to register and find their seat. Refreshments will be provided and donations will be welcomed to help cover the event costs.

The presentations and discussions will focus on many agricultural and forestry topics including how to manage invasive species, hot topics in farm and soils management, produce safety for fresh and farm market sales, and how to properly dispose of pesticide jugs.

The last half hour of the event will feature a panel of farmers and landowners who are verified in the Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP), a free and voluntary farmer and landowner program that recognizes environmental stewardship.

Attendees will be able to earn three continuing education credits for commercial and restricted use pesticide certifications.

The meeting is in partnership with the MAEAP program and is considered a phase one event, meaning it is the first step required for a farm or landowner to become MAEAP verified and start the process. RSVPs are requested by January 12th by calling Andrew Booher, MAEAP Technician, Mason-Lake Conservation District at: 231-757-3707 ext. 107.
