Obituary: Robert Eugene Hill, 78, of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Robert was born in Champaign, Illinois on August 23, 1945. He passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023, in West Palm Beach, Florida, due to heart issues. He was a current resident of West Palm Beach Florida.  He also spent his life at his second home on Hamlin Lake in Ludington and resided many years in Grand Rapids.

He spent his summers growing up in Ludington, forming a lifelong bond with Hamlin Lake. He served with distinction in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1971. Pursuing his academic passions, Bob graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in architecture.

Bob’s impressive career in architecture began in Grand Rapids, and spanned over 45 years, with the last two decades in West Palm Beach. His architectural legacy, marked by innovative designs and a deep commitment to his craft, is admired by many.

Bob was a sailing enthusiast, known for his love of sailing on Hamlin Lake in Ludington in his cherished E-Scow, and had a knack for storytelling, often recalling the time he capsized while sailing with family and friends. His passion for sports was evident in his dedication to the Bears and the Fighting Illini, frequently catching games with friends in West Palm Beach.

 In West Palm Beach, Bob was known for his vibrant friend group, including his buddies at local bars like Grease, and his colleagues. These friendships, formed over two decades, were a testament to his warm personality and sense of loyalty. He was a central figure in this close-knit circle, and his friends cherished his companionship, humor, and stories. He was a devout Catholic and was a parishioner at St. Anns in West Palm Beach.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Wilson and Pearl Hill; his sisters, Judy Murphy and Susan Austin; and his brother-in-law, Jeff Austin.

He is survived by his sister, Nancy Duffy; brother, John Hill (Linda); niece, Carissa May (Donnie); and nephew, Timothy Murphy (Kerrie), whom he lovingly guided as a guardian. His routine calls to Nancy and John every Sunday showcased his enduring family ties. He also leaves behind numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 2 p.m. at St. Simon Catholic Church, 702 E. Bryant Rd, Ludington with Rev. Wayne B. Wheeler Jr. presiding. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. at the church.

Bob’s legacy continues in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
