Man sentenced for embezzlement

By Allison Scarbrough, Editor

LUDINGTON — A 28-year-old man received a delayed sentence in Mason County’s 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, Nov. 28, for an embezzlement conviction.

Thomas James Bentz pleaded guilty, Oct. 17, to embezzlement by an agent or trustee between $1,000 to $20,000.

Bentz received a delayed sentence of 11 months and was ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution to the Hamlin Grocery store. If he abides by the terms of his probation, he can plead to a reduced charge. His final sentencing is set for Sept. 24, 2024.

“The store owners were very compassionate to allow the defendant to remain felony-free on record,” said Mason County Assistant Prosecutor Beth Hand regarding the delayed sentencing agreement. ”This is a situation where the individuals trusted someone … and that trust was betrayed.” Hand said it appears Bentz’s gambling and alcohol problems led to his offense.

“My client does exhibit a heightened level of self awareness,” said Bentz’s attorney Horia Neagos who appeared in court via Zoom video conferencing. The attorney noted his client’s lack of prior criminal convictions.
