Obituary: Loren Boes, 84, of Custer

Loren Lee Boes, 84, of Custer, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

Loren was born on March 14, 1939, in Muskegon. In 1957, after high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps and transferred to the Marine Corps Reserves in 1959. From 1961 to 2020, Loren owned many car dealerships. Some of those dealerships were in Muskegon, Walhalla, R & B Motors in Scottville, and lastly, Boes Auto Sales in Custer.

He would always give a helping hand to anyone coming to his car lot. From 1961 to 2020 he was an avid race car driver, first driving on his own and later having others drive in his place. At one point, he was the co-owner of Winston Speedway, and owned Bozos Party Store. He also enjoyed taking care of his chickens, his three dogs, Bandit, Blackie, and Brownie, and going dancing.

Loren is survived by his significant other, Kay Kortge; and many nieces and nephews.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Grace (Essenberg) Boes; daughter, Debbie Boes; siblings, Donna (Russell) Vanderwall, Kenneth (Barbara) Boes, and Allen (Shirley) Boes.

A special thank you to Michael O’Connell for caring for Loren during his final weeks, and continued support.

A memorial service will be on Friday, November 10, 2023, at Bachelor Evangelical Church, 5940 E. Sugar Grove Rd., in Sheridan Township beginning at noon. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. Military Honors will follow at the church.
