Midland man, 82, dies from apparent drowning in Lake Michigan

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — An 82-year-old Midland, Michigan man died from an apparent drowning in Lake Michigan Sunday, Sept. 3, at Summit Township Park, according to the Hart post of the Michigan State Police.

Eric Falk Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene after a Good Samaritan pulled him from the water and performed CPR.

Initial information released indicated that the drowning victim was 78 years old.

“Around 3:05 p.m. on Sep. 3, 2023 in Summit Township of Mason County at the beach on Lake Michigan, Eric Falk Peterson went for a swim in Lake Michigan,” states an MSP press release. “Eric was overcome by the water and was observed by a subject on the beach to be face down in the lake. That Good Samaritan rushed out and pulled Eric from the water and began CPR. 

“Troopers arrived on scene shortly after and began CPR for an extended period of time before EMS was on scene. We placed an AED on Eric, and one shock was advised. Once EMS arrived on scene, we continued CPR and rotated on and off before Eric was pronounced dead. We were assisted by several Good Samaritans, who helped with providing medical attention as well as CPR. Also assisting were Life EMS and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.”
