Manistee shooting suspect arraigned

MANISTEE — The 19-year-old Muskegon man suspected of shooting two people Friday in the City of Manistee has been formally charged with five counts. Deontae Deshawn Duncan was arraigned in Manistee County’s 85th District Court and charged with assault with intent to murder, two counts of felony firearms, receiving and concealing firearms, and carrying a concealed weapon. He is lodged in the Manistee County Jail with a bond set at $750,000 cash.

Duncan is suspected of shooting a 36-year-old Traverse City man in the abdomen and a 19-year-old Muskegon man in the extremities on Friday, June 16. The incident occurred in the 200 block of 5th street.

According to Manistee Police Department Chief Joshua Glass, the investigation of the case has indicated that the shootings were drug related.

Several Mason County agencies assisted in the search and investigation on Friday and also over the weekend.

The 36-year-old Traverse City man was transported by helicopter to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City where he has been upgraded from critical to stable. The 19-year-old Muskegon man was transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital and was listed in stable condition.

In addition to Manistee Police Department, agencies assisting included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Ludington Police Department, Mason County Emergency Management, Life EMS, Mason-Oceana 911, Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police, SSCENT (drug enforcement team), Manistee Fire Department, Manistee County Emergency Management, Manistee Department of Public Works, Mobile Medical Response ambulance, Michigan Department of Natural Resources law enforcement, Benzie County Sheriff’s Office, and AeroMed.
