GRANT TOWNSHIP — An archeological dig is taking place this week on the property of Larry and Lorraine Leray, located near the intersection of Quarterline and Townline roads. The dig is being led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in partnership with the Mason-Lake Conservation District. According to USDA District Conservationist Seth Earl, the Lerays have partnered with the USDA to plant trees and wildflowers on 15 acres of their 40 acres of land. Geological surveys showed that the area was once Lake Michigan shoreline, likely about 11,000 years ago. Additionally, the area also likely included a river outlet. These are areas that ancient people often used as encampments. Watch the video for more information.
