Historic Riverton house damaged by fire

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief

RIVERTON TOWNSHIP — Fire damaged a house that was originally built in the 1800s Monday, Dec. 12. The house, at 4087 S. Gordon Road, is owned by Dan Reid. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at 1:01 p.m. Dan’s son, Gabriel, lives next door. He said he works third shift and was sleeping. He was awoken by noises and looked outside to discover his dad’s house on fire. His father wasn’t home at the time of the fire.

Gabriel said his dad, who does not have a cell phone, is a chimney sweep and was supposed to be working in the Hart area today. If anyone has seen him, please have him contact Gabriel at 231-464-9791 immediately.

Responding fire departments included Riverton Fire Department, Scottville Fire Department, Custer Fire Department and Pentwater Fire Department. Fountain Area Fire Department Auxiliary was also responding.

Riverton Fire Captain Todd VanNortwick said he did not know what started the fire.

Gabriel said the original portion of the house was built in the 1800s. He said the fire appeared to have started in the chicken coop, which is located adjacent to the house.
