Inmate’s cause of death determined to be cardiac arrest.

LUDINGTON — The autopsy and toxicology reports of Crandal Smith, who died at the Mason County Jail Oct. 11, determined that the inmate’s cause of death was cardiac arrest, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole in a press release Tuesday, Nov. 1.

“Mr. Smith had no illegal substances in his system,” said Sheriff Cole. “The cause of death has been classified as ‘natural causes due to cardiac arrest.’

“Although the passing of anyone in our jails is unfortunate, our jails are a microcosm of society. The same struggles and medical concerns facing us all when in the community are the same when incarcerated. It is my hope that Mr. Smith’s family can find closure with the conclusion of the medical examiner’s report.”

The autopsy was conducted at the Western Michigan University School of Medicine in Kalamazoo.
