Bystander saves elderly man from drowning in Ludington Harbor.

PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — A 79-year-old West Bloomfield, Michigan man was rescued from the Ludington Harbor by a heroic bystander Saturday afternoon, Aug. 20, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“The victim was pulled from the water by a 62-year-old Kalamazoo, Michigan man who entered the water after seeing the events unfold,” said Sheriff Cole.

The water emergency occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. approximately 100 yards from the south pier where the man began to struggle. As Mason County sheriff’s deputies and first responders were responding the scene, the Kalamazoo man jumped in the water and rescued the elderly man, said Cole. Pere Marquette Township Fire Department and Life EMS were also dispatched to the scene.

The victim refused medical treatment.
