K-9 leads police to woman who fell 75 feet into ravine.

CUSTER TOWNSHIP — K-9 Diego made a heroic discovery Thursday evening, July 21, when he led police to a 58-year-old Custer woman who had been trapped for nearly 24 hours after falling 75 feet into a ravine, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

The woman was reported missing after a friend went to check on her after she had not heard from her for a couple days, said Sheriff Cole. “The friend went to the residence to find the victim’s car in the driveway with the door open. Following a search of the residence with no success, Mason County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Ken Baum and his partner, K-9 Diego, responded.

“Diego alerted to an area, and a track was started,” said Sheriff Cole. “Following a 10-minute track, the victim was found, injured after falling down into a 75-feet ravine. It appeared the victim had been in the ravine for up to 24 hours after a fall.”

Life EMS transported the woman to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital for her injuries, which are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. in the 3400 block of East Wilson Road.
